Vampire: The Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition
by Nick
Publisher: White Wolf
Date Added: 03/18/2024 13:03:02
pixel_trans.gif Vampire: The Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition Been a happy customer of both DTRPG and everything onyx path for over a decade. White wolf and OWD even longer, since I picked up my 1st with a copy of werewolf the apocalypse 2nd edition from a Walden books in the 4th grade. Until I bought the hardback of this. I regret not paying attention to the reviews of other's physical purchases. Unboxing this was as disappointing as childhood Christmas morning when the action figure I wanted had a broken limb straight out the box and now the ninja turtle can only hold one katana instead of 2. I would expect more care in the packaging of a pricey print but after unboxing my book this morning, I discovered my copy's upper part of the spine cover looks like a compressed green squishmellow and the 1st dozen pages have a similar crease near the spine too. The rest of the book is great but the damage is what's keeping this a 5 star. Unless a reasonable accommodation is made, I think I'm going to hold off on future onyx path purchases. Pretty disappoi...

Daggerheart Open Beta Playtest
by Richard
Publisher: Darrington Press
Date Added: 03/18/2024 06:03:43
pixel_trans.gif Daggerheart Open Beta Playtest Really is a hot mess of different elements of systems dragged from different RPGs without, seemingly, any real understanding or direction of what they want to do with them. It's like someone's asked ChatGPT for a list of cool system things in the RPG world and then told it to stick 'em all together. There's just too much system for what little it really does and its needlessly complex for what it states its trying to be and do. It feels like a Frakenstein's Monster of a system of all different parts thrown in there - different elements from lots of other systems all whipped together. It feels messy and badly conceived. If I were the designer I'd go back to the core mechanic and challenge myself, beginning with that, as to why I want and need each mechanic even starting with the 2d12 Hope/Fear mechanic. Why is it there? What is it trying to do? What does it support in the game? Does it add needless complexity? I'd then only add in what passed those kind of questions. There's too much ...

One Less Grave
by Michael
Publisher: Chaosium
Date Added: 03/17/2024 20:11:56
pixel_trans.gif One Less Grave It's not as good as Mummy of Pemberly Grange, but I like this scenario quite a bit. It's short and easy to prep for (as all of the Seeds of Terror scenarios are meant to be), but it builds up the suspense nicely and presents the PCs with a creepy, powerful supernatural threat. My only complaint is that I wish there was a bit more for the PCs to discover in the church and crypt, maybe something that gives a bit more backstory to the horrific events that are about to occur. Still, a creative Keeper could always come up with some of this stuff themselves. ...

Hand of Glory
by Michael
Publisher: Chaosium
Date Added: 03/17/2024 20:09:09
pixel_trans.gif Hand of Glory This is a pretty decent one-shot. Like all of the other entries in this series, it's designed to be very easy for the Keeper to prep and should only take a few hours at most to play through. I had previously bought Mummy of Pemberly Grange and One Less Grave, and I think both of those scenarios are better than this one. My problem with Hand of Glory is that it just feels very threadbare in terms of plot and backstory and just too simple overall. It also doesn't really present the PCs with enough danger or threats IMO. Pemberly Grange was pretty simple too, but that had a nice subtle build up and an ever-present threat that was always stalking the PCs. I think Hand of Glory could actually be a pretty fun scenario with extensive revisions from the Keeper though, and I do feel like the threads of a good adventure are in here, so for the price I think it's worth it. ...

Artifices, Deceptions, & Dilemmas
by Jerry
Publisher: Hack & Slash Publishing
Date Added: 03/17/2024 19:05:46
pixel_trans.gif Artifices, Deceptions, & Dilemmas Excellent reference work and resource. A, D, and D is a look at what dungeons are made of. Tables, descriptions and pictures of the many types of rooms you might find in a dungeon, along with descriptions of their purpose and possible contents. Lists of traps, and some very good writing about the nature, purpose and utility of traps. But beyond that, the author delves into the psychology of traps, from the perspective of the players and the DM, not something I've seen before. I normally don't go in for "GM advice" type of stuff, but Courtney Campbell's writing is succinct and very useful. This isn't an elitist "killer DM" screed written by someone who thinks they're smarter than you. It's a set of very practical tools that you can use in your game right now. All in all, this book is indispensable, in my opinion. As are all of this author's books. It's got me thinking of how I can use it, and that's a success as far as this type of product is concerned. Does it inspire? Does it set you ...

pixel_trans.gif Basic Fantasy RPG Core Rules 4thEd Excellent. I prefer AD&D 2E since that's what I've played all my life, but after the whole license drama, I'm fed up with Wizards of the Coast (it's cool I got fed up with TSR before that). Old School Essentials is indeed a valuable (I won't go so far as to say essential) addition to the TTRPG "old schoolers" like myself.
