Pharaoh Ramses II hasn’t seen his long-lost cousin Moses in nearly forty years. Yet while pressed by the Hittites to the North and construction delays in the South, Ramses must make time for this ancient desert rascal, the long-ago mystery he represents, and the impossible demands of an alien deity. Drawing on the Bible, the Qur’an, and historical sources, writer A. David Lewis (Mortal Coils) and artist Marvin Perry Mann (Arcana Jayne) present a retelling of the Book of Exodus through the eyes of the man who is either its greatest leader or its worst villain: a man trying to rule wisely, love his family well, and deal justly in the face of a divine wrath. Originally published in b&w by Caption Box, ASP is proud to present a new full-color edition with coloring by Jennifer Rodgers.

Nominated for three Harvey Awards, including Best Graphic Novel, original*; Best New Talent (A. David Lewis); and Best Colorist (Jennifer Rodgers).

The Lone and Level Sands is a stunning display of literary excellence and an artistic tour de force that is …probably the best graphic novel I will ever read.”

-- Tim Lasiuta, Comics Buyer’s Guide #1618, July 2006

“…I unhesitatingly and enthusiastically recommend The Lone and Level Sands to readers of any and all faith commitments. Lewis provides a unique take on a familiar story, and mpMann's artwork is rich, unique, and takes full advantage of the vast resources provided by Egyptian iconography, hieroglyphics, and monumental scenery…this is a lovely, finely-crafted book, well worth the cover price. And while Mann's line work works very well on its own, Jennifer Rodgers' coloring adds atmosphere and flavor to Mann's drawings, adding a feeling of the shimmering desert heat, the light of the Egyptian sun and the palpable darkness of the ninth plague, which deepens feelings of raw emotion using a simple, unified palette…While the plot is familiar to many, Lewis's success at getting inside the characters themselves is what makes The Lone and Level Sands compelling reading on an entirely different level.”

-- Jim Witt, www.comicbookgalaxy.com

“Lewis quietly turns it into an epic, almost classical struggle between gods, with humans hapless and ultimately damaged pawns of the game…A good read.”

-- Steven Grant, Permanent Damage at www.comicbookresources.com

The Lone and the Level Sands is a very intelligent, and interesting, re-imagining of events that most of us have heard many times before, yet Lewis manages to still make the story interesting and new at the same time. Couple that with fine art from Mann and Rodgers, and you have yourself a fine comic package.”

-- Brian Cronin, http://goodcomics.blogspot.com/

“…an unflinching examination of a desperate chapter in history and religion. [The Lone and Level Sands] is a powerful, moving reconsideration of an otherwise familiar tale. It is guaranteed to provoke.”

-- Joe Sutliff Sanders, Voice Of Youth Advocates August 2000

“Those who are intimately familiar with the Bible and those who aren’t will both find something to like in this book… Marvin Mann’s art evokes everyone from Eisner to Miller to Mazzuchelli but [he] remains his own artist… The book tells the tale of Moses and the book of Exodus in straightforward, dramatic fashion… What I like the most is that Lewis et al. just tell the story and let its time-tested drama carry the weight of entertaining. There’s no sense of being preached to and the color…really gives the book a nice visual depth. A-“

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
